Our Story

How it all started...

Magnolia Baptist Church was organized in 1942 under the name of Beacon Baptist Church. The church has seen many changes since those humble beginnings, first meeting in a tent and then a concrete block building constructed by the men of the Brotherhood.

In 1954, the name changed to Magnolia Street Baptist Church. The name change coincided with the decision to construct a permanent sanctuary and education facility facing the opposite direction toward Magnolia Street. The construction was completed in 1962.

In the late 1970’s, the church purchased 20 acres on Wansley Road for the purpose of relocation. While the sanctuary was being constructed, services were held at Magnolia Street and Wansley Road. The Wansley Road services were held in a trailer. We became known as “one church at two locations”- believed to be the first in the State of Mississippi.

The temporary sanctuary was completed in 1982 and additional educational space was added in 1983.

Expanding the vision...

Today, Magnolia Baptist Church is continuing to build on the foundation laid by those who came before us. We are a thriving family that seeks to glorify God in all that we do and to see lives transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We seek to proclaim the Word of God with our lips and to demonstrate the love of God with our lives.

Where we are headed...

Our goal is to obey the will of God in whatever He leads us to do. This is normally where others may lay out their 5, 10, or even 20 year plan. To be honest, all we can do is be obedient to what God has called us to right now, and that is to faithfully proclaim the Word of God and to love on those in our community.

We're not looking to build "our" kingdom in Laurel, we're looking to advance God's kingdom here. We believe that Jesus died for people not buildings. So, where are we headed? Wherever the Lord allows.

"The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps."
